So, What is Online Counseling Exactly?

As our world continues to become more and more electronic, the therapy world evolves with it. Online counseling, also known as telehealth, telemedicine, distance therapy, or e-counseling, is the use of a secure audio and video program to hold a counseling session with counselor and client in different locations.

Due to the Coronavirus pandemic of 2020, I have become much more well-versed with online counseling, and I really enjoy it! It has allowed me to see another side of my clients that I would not be able to see otherwise and vice versa. I get to see the cat who I always hear about in sessions or clients can show me their rooms.

Online counseling is flexible and convenient. It’s counseling brought to you! If you do not have reliable transportation, you can attend sessions from your home. If you have a busy schedule, you can meet with me during your lunch break at work. There are so many options! It has also allowed for clients who typically feel they don’t have time for sessions to reengage in therapy. It is also flexible in the sense that, if you are not fully comfortable with video yet, we can turn off the video feature and just use audio! can be customized for each person’s preference and level of comfort.

In a lot of ways, it feels very similar to traditional therapy sessions. We discuss the same topics, sit with the same emotions, and involve coping skills or relaxation techniques. While I will continue to offer in-person sessions (as long as society isn’t completely run by technology some day), I believe online counseling is a great option for care, and I hope people continue to become more comfortable with the idea of it!
